New Release Tuesday: War Witch

War Witch IMDb
Darn good film.  It is from Canada but it was all shot in the Congo in Africa.  It was also nominated for Best Foreign at this year's Oscars.  This film got me going.  It was harsh but not too graphic.  It was sweet, romantic, and dramatic.  What made the movie was certain little moments like the white rooster aspect.  According to magical traditions over there is that if you want to marry a beautiful girl, you must give her a white rooster.  The movie starts out strong with war stuff and then turns a bit fun and romantic and after a while, it turns back to hardcore war stuff.  Love the revenge scene towards the end.  I think is one of the best revenge scenes I've seen in a while.  Don't want to say too much about it so we leave it like that.  Don't mind buying this movie one day for my Foreign section.

Lady and the Tramp

Lady and the Tramp IMDb
First time seeing this Disney classic.  Of course it's my first time, I'm blogging it, dammit!  It was cute.  I liked certain moments like the evil cats scene and of course the classic romantic scene of the two dogs eating spaghetti.  My girlfriend made spaghetti and meatballs tonight just for this movie.  My son was with us.  He refused to eat the meatballs today, but, after watching this scene, I encouraged him to try it.  He loved it.  The movie was short and simple.  One house dog falls for a street dog.  I love one certain moment in the movie: the moment where Tramp shows Lady the city from afar.  They see a suburban neighborhood, the tramp tells Lady that there's dogs there but they're stuck there in their homes.  There's a whole world out there.  Then you see lots of wild stuff out there beyond the suburban neighborhood.  Thought that was wonderful.  Glad that my son lives in Austin and we are able to expose him to what's out there plus more.  Since, I didn't grow up with this movie, I thought it was overall okay.  We bought it only because my girlfriend grew up with this movie.

Waitress

Waitress IMDb
Got in touch with my soft side and saw a cheesy girlie movie with my woman.  The payoff was that she made an apple pie from scratch.  It was her first time.  Not bad.  This movie is all about pies.  Okay, besides the pies, it's also about this waitress who is pregnant by her unwanted husband and she's miserable and she gets heads over heels like other woman about a likeable doctor.  There's cute little moments that happen in most of the diner scenes including scenes with an old man named Joe (who happens to be the owner of this diner).  All these other scenes outside the diner were okay.  I would only recommend this movie if you have any sort of pie handy otherwise not recommended.

A Company Man

A Company Man IMDb
Badass Korean action thriller.  Love the beginning scene.  This is a movie I heard nothing about.  I just picked it up at Vulcan Video just for kicks.  Good little surprise.  Not saying it's a true masterpiece, but, a movie about a company of contract killers?  Hell to the yes.  Lots of blood gets shed here.  Favorite hit was the guy in the parking garage.  He sees our main character and gets paranoid.  He sees this other guy carrying a hamper.  He gets more paranoid.  He reaches the elevator and smiles to a cute Korean girl.  Boom! She smiles back pulling the trigger and he falls to the hamper who happens to be just right there.  Lots of other cool moments.  This is worth buying, my friends.  Nice call for an action night.  Simple story!

The Children / Come Out And Play

The Children IMDb
I am off from work today so decided to throw a double feature.  In honor of Fantastic Fest coming soon, I picked two movies that played there in previous years.  These two movies share a theme: evil children.  The Children was shown at Fantastic Fest in 2009.  This was pretty good.  Poor acting (mostly the adults) but fair enough.  After watching this, I decided to not have kids ever again.  These bastards were evil.  Some sort of disease or something turned these kids against their parents during their trip out to the woods.  I just wanted to see these kids die.  Towards the end, I got my wish.  Fantastic!!!  Best killing scene:  Casey, the young adult, kills one of the kid who their head sticking out of the door.  2nd best killing moment: daughter stabs mom in the eye.  The other kills were so and so.   It's not everyday you see kids getting killed on screen.  So for that, this was pretty good.  I wouldn't buy it but good for a one time only deal.

Come Out And Play IMDb
This movie from Mexico is the remake of a Spaniard movie: Who Can Kill A Child?  Saw the remake years back and I wasn't totally impressed.  It was an okay movie.  The only reason I wanted to watch this remake is because it was shown at last year's Fantastic Fest.  It is basically the same plot.  Duh!  I was still a bit disappointed in the end.  I think this one wasn't as brutal as the original.  You still see kids killing and getting killed.  There was one big flaw in the end with one of the cops.  What kind of tourist would take their pregnant wife to an island by a small boat in Mexico?  That's another thing I didn't like.  Oh well.  This isn't worth watching at all.  The original was better.

New Release Tuesday: The Iceman

The Iceman IMDb
Michael Shannon as a hitman based on a true story? Count me in, mother"beep"!  This movie was not bad.  It didn't kick ass either but it kept me intrigued all the way through.   For that, this gets many kudos.  We got Winona Ryder who looks like that one British girl in "Bridesmaids."  We got a very short alright cameo by James Franco.  Ray Liotta plays a mean non likeable gangster boss.  Oh, Chris Evans is pretty cool here as a hitman who drives an ice cream truck.  Now, for that, this is worth seeing.  Maybe to buy if it's on sale.  In other words, this isn't worth paying full price for.

Samurai Monday: Samurai I: Musashi Miyamoto

Samurai I: Musashi Miyamoto IMDb
Enjoyed it a lot more than I expected.  My girlfriend best described this film as a "Samurai novela" (soap opera).  This is part of a trilogy and now that I saw this, I am curious to know what happens next with our main character here.  It left this story unfinished on purpose.  I'm guessing part 2 and 3 are the continuation of this story.  I like the little crazy battles in the beginning of the story.  The second half deals with a love story between our samurai in-training guy and his friend's girlfriend.  Lots of dramatic scenes.  So you kind of got the "samurai novela" part.  We have a few unlikeable characters that we wish they would get killed.  When is that going to happen? That's the real question. Well, now we know what's the next movie for October's Samurai Monday:  Samurai II.
