Tokyo!

New Release Tuesdays Presents:

Tokyo!
This was an interesting film.
There's three different stories.
The first story is directed by Michel Gondry.
The story was okay. The ending got a little
weird, but that's just Michel Gondry.
The second story was my favorite.
The character, Merde, is considered to a very memorable
character in my book. The ending of that story was okay.
The third story was not as good as the first
two. But still worth checking out.

As a whole, we have a good artsy kind of film.
I will only buy it for two reasons:
One, if I want to start a Michel Gondry collection,
I have to have this one.
Two, for that second story.
It was different.

Mad Detective

Mad Detective
This was a bad ass psychological thriller
from Hong Kong.
It kind of messed up my head a little
but it was easy to follow.
Every minute kept me alert.
Good original story.

Highly Recommend this film.
This gets an A.

Confessions of a Superhero

This is a dvd I was waiting 6 months for.
Blockbuster finally shipped it to me.
So tonight I had a late night screening
of this documentary.
I remember seeing these people in front of the Chinese Theatre
in Hollywood.
This documentary captures their personal lives.
The intro and the first act was good.
It slowed down a bit for the second act.
I think the filmmakers told the story good.
This is a must see for Superman fans.
This is a must have for a documentary collection.

Home Movie

Home Movie
This independent movie was shot
"Blair the Witch Project Style."
It starts out a little too normal then it turns
a little bit disturbing.
But not as disturbing as I thought.
Just like other movies that are shot like
this, one questions why the camera still
records in certain moments.
Even though there is not a very a good plot
for this story, it caught my full attention.
The parents are annoying and the kids are psycho,
but not psycho enough.
For this type of movie, I give it a C+

Europa Europa

I officially name every 4th Thursday
of every month as:
"Foreign Film Thursday"

Foreign Film Thursday Presents:

Europa, Europa
Here we have a German film that takes place
around World War 2.
It's based on a true story and it's original.
There's no complaints.
If I have to complain about something,
it would be on some of the music.
It sounded too similar to the Godfather theme song.

My grade for this WW2 flick is a straight up B.

Waltz With Bashir

New Release Tuesdays Presents:

Waltz With Bashir
Nothing good or at least interesting to me came out
today except for this animated flick from Israel.
I remember I kept seeing the trailer for this
movie on other dvds.
It looked interesting.
This whole thing is original.
I never seen an animated movie
that was part war movie and part documentary.
I was just there processing information.
It's not totally blown off the charts and
and entertaining.
But still, good enough to see once in your life.
I do love some of the parts in it.
I love the sounds, the music, and part of
the war scenes. I like the final images before it goes
to credits.

If you're into war movies, this is probably worth
to check out. If not, then you'll probably be a little
bored. My grade is a B-.

Election

Election
It is not Asian night nor is it Gangster Night,
but here we have both themes in one.
Election was an entertaining movie from Hong Kong.
There's some crazy scenes here and there.
I can't imagine anybody eating a spoon until
tonight.

It's not all bad ass, but it delivers.

Look

Look
At first, I wasn't sure about this.
Once I started knowing all the characters,
I became hooked.
The way they put it together was awesome.
The ending was very funny.
Some of the actors weren't very good.
But for the most part, suprisingly, I thought this
was a kick ass flick.

This was worth the rent.

Crossing Over

Crossing Over
This was a little entertaining drama.
The director did a good job bringing
the message about the struggles of these
illegal immigrants. But sometimes it felt
that the movie overused that theme.
Some of the characters are likeable and
some are very believable.
My favorite scene that brings a little power to
the movie is the convenience store scene where
the Koreans are robbing the place and there's
a shootout.

The director, Wayne Kramer, also directed
Running Scared.
I enjoyed Running Scared more, but this
was okay.
Let's put it this way, it didn't suck.

Compañeros

I have acquired a taste for these spaghetti westerns.
I will be watching them on the 3rd Wednesday of
every month.

Spaghetti Western Wednesday Presents:

Compañeros
The first half was okay.
It gets a little better in the second half.
I would say this is your average spaghetti western.
I love the scene where El Vasco cooks up
the enemy's favorite bird.
This movie is also political.
This was directed by Sergio Corbucci.
So far in my little education of these specific westerns,
my favorite directors are the three Sergio's
(Sergio Leone, Sergio Corbucci, and Sergio Sollima).
This movie is for fans of spaghetti westerns.
If you're not into them, then this
will be boring and a waste of time.

Friday the 13th (Remake)

New Release Tuesdays Presents:

Friday the 13th (Remake)
Ok, I'll try not to be harsh.
I was fairly disappointed with this movie.
It is mainly with the editing and the plot of the story.
There's some good scary scenes, but that's it.
Nothing special.

Spoiler:
My favorite kill is that one half naked girl who is
hiding in the water underneath the dock and she
gets a machete popsicle.

Here's a major concern I had.
Jason seemed to be everywhere.
One scene he's burning this girl in the middle of the woods,
the next shot he is in the house chasing
this couple. How did he get there that quick?
And why did he leave that guy stuck in that claw
behind? Then he comes back and finishes him off.
I totally lost it. But then again, this is a fucking remake.

I wasted less than two hours of my life tonight.
I just wanted to get this over with because
I had that feeling. I still wanted to check it out
because I grew up watching the Jason movies
(not that I'm considered a fan).
I don't want to make this too long,
this blog it's supposed to be just short comments.
So goodnight, Jack.

The Hangover

Update (6-14-2009 10:05 a.m)

The Hangover
Freaking Hilarious comedy!!
I went into this movie already with a buzz
(keep that in mind).
This movie cracked me up all the way until
the last credit rolled.
Well put together.
This group of actors had good chemistry together.
I say that when it comes to the movie
in general, this is up there with
the movie Old School (by the same director).
But when it comes to the comedy,
I believe this one was funnier than Old School.

Highly Recommended!! Good Summer movie.
Now I got to remember: what happened after the movie
ended? And how I got home?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Watching The Hangover late tonight.
I will post my comments tomorrow morning
(during my own hangover).

The International

This little action thriller is a good
one time only entertainment that
delivers the goods 30 minutes before the movie
ends.
The intro and the first act was good but
too slow for an action film.
But it makes sense, I guess, because there's
a shit load of information to process.
I'm not too fond of Clive Owen's performance.
I did like all these different locations.

If you like movies like Shooter and Body of Lies,
then this is worth the rent.
But Shooter and Body of Lies are a little better
for me.

Defiance

Defiance
I'll make this short and simple.
This is an alright flick that takes place
during War World 2.
A little too long for me,
but it was entertaining.

These group of Jews are out killing nazis to
survive.
It kind of pumped me up for Inglorious Basterds (comes out Aug.21).

Gran Torino

New Release Tuesdays Presents:

Gran Torino
Clint Eastwood's latest was not as good as I thought.
It's alright.
To me, it felt as if this was Clint Eastwood's first attempt
at making a film.
If I was making my first feature film,
it would feel like this.
Straightforward dialogue,
little bit of bad acting among some of the actors.
There's also some problems with the plot.
(For example, that one white guy saying bro to
the colored people. Clint Eastwood's character just
happened to know that was going on from
a mile away.)
That was the first half.
The second half was a little better.
My favorite part was the barbershop scene,
where Walt was teaching Thao how men talk.

Even though it gets predictable towards the end,
I thought as a whole, was just average.

Joint Security Area

Asian Cinema Night Presents

Joint Security Area
This is a film directed by Chan-Wook Park who did this
before his vengeance trilogy.
I must say that I officially endorsed Chan-Wook Park
as my favorite Korean filmmaker.
Oldboy is still his masterpiece.
But, this movie is very well done.
I love the direction and the performances.
Like all his films, I love the shots
and the editing.
I have no complaints whatsoever.

This is a good war film.

End of the Line

Besides the very bad acting and dialogue
by some of the people, this story kicked ass
in the end.
I love the concept they have in here concerning
the apocalypse.
There's a few messed up scenes that
will give splatter and gore fans their kicks.
And a few others that shouldn't be on here,
but oh well.
This was cool for a low budget canadian flick.

Save yourself from this!!

Nobel Son

Nobel Son
Not too bad for a heist film.
Kinda clever actually.
There was some laughs here and there.
It is semi original as well.
Of course, all heist films have to deal
about getting lots of money or at least
something very valuable.
This one is no different.
Entertainment-wise, good to check out.

Don't like movies like Ocean's 11 and Jackie Brown?
Then don't bother looking at this one.
My grade is B-.
