My midnight movie on my first day at Fantastic Fest this year was this latest from Japanese director, Takashi Miike. It rocked but it took a while. Yakuzas and yakuza vampires. The frog scene towards the end is what makes this movie. I'm talking about a kung fu frog here. So badass. The rest was so and so. The usual for an over the top Japanese affair. Lots of blood. Great midnight movie.
If I was a 14 year old, this would be so badass. But, I'm not 14 years old. I'm fucking 34 years old, holmes. This was stupid but funny. The characters are meant to be stupid. The one that looks like Justin Timberlake pissed me off though. Low budget sci fi movie made here in Austin, TX. There were some cool stupid jokes here but nothing too special. It got ridiculous towards the end.
Fantastic Fest 2015 is here. This is the opening film. A film that's absurd, comedic, quirky, and romantic. Probably the most romantic movie I've seen this year. Dystopian movie. Colin Farrell plays a role he's never done before. Loved it a lot. Love the quirky moments (lots of dancing). Love how this portrays relationships in real life. It's done in an absurd way here but it was cool noticing how they were comparing stuff. True love. Bad relationships and marriage. All in here. Good start to the festival. Kudos to the director who also did a weird movie a few years ago called Dogtooth.
Beach Boys! Great biopic. Love their music but didn't know too much about their history. This is all about Brian Wilson and his mental struggles. Goes back in forth from the 60's to the future. There were some things that they didn't really show. Old Brian Wilson said that his wife saved him a long time ago but they never showed that. They never showed what happened to him and his wife. It's all about the troubles he had with his "guardian" aka manager. Paul Giamatti plays a wonderful monster. Not too much in Paul Dano. John Cusack did good. Can't go wrong with a soundtrack full of Beach Boys music.
Wow! Fucking, wow! This is pure awesome science fiction. Science fiction at its best. Saw an advanced screening tonight and in 3D. I was seating in the second row to the front and you know what, I've really enjoyed the hell out of this movie. Great story. Great characters. Love that there is a lot of humor on here. Love that music is a big part of some scenes. Matt fucking Damon delivers. At first this seemed like an Interstellar ripoff so I was worried. And I haven't been a fan of Ridley Scott for a long time. But, this movie exceeded my expectations. I'm a fan of Interstellar and Gravity but I think this would be my favorite space/astronaut movie out of the three. Must see. I don't usually see 3D movies but this was really good in that department. It's a big blockbuster space movie but with a lot of heart. It's a survival movie and a search and rescue movie. Lots of science. Kudos on the caffeinated astrodynamicist played Donald Glover. Steals the scenes he's in. I gotta have a potato food theme with this whenever it comes out. The Martian is probably my favorite movie this year so far (or a really close tie with Mad Max). This will be shown at Fantastic Fest later this week but it will be nationwide the following week. Must see for sure.

Pretty awesome gangster drama based on the real life Boston gangster, Whitey Bulger. Johnny fucking Depp plays that gangster. Cold blooded most of the times. He nailed his role after a while. Typical gangster stuff. Snitch, disrespect, or betray and there will be no mercy. Enjoyed it. I'm a big fan of gangster movies so I've seen my fair share. Having said that, this didn't really stood out for me. It delivered but not exceeded my expectations. So if you're in the mood for a gangster drama, this would not disappoint but nothing too spectacular. The performances were awesome though. My favorite performance is not actually Depp's. It is by Joel Edgerton. He plays a scumbag FBI agent who helps Bulger. Edgerton disappears and becomes that character. Kudos for him playing a different kind of role. This movie also has a good flow. Oh yeah, boi! Awesome coming of age comedy we have here. This is one of those movies I didn't see the trailer for but heard a lot of buzz about it since their hit at Sundance this year. Enjoyed it. There were times were it was too silly but there were a shit load of great moments that made up for it. Plus, all this is in L.A. This reminded me a little bit of the movie, Friday. Not the story but the feeling. Also reminded me of Boyz in the Hood and Superbad. It has the "positive, never give up, and stay true to yourself" cliche story but like I said or wrote, there were a lot of bad ass moments. You can't go wrong with a black kid and his friends who call themselves geeks and they idolize 90's hip hop more than the present and they happen to be in a punk band. That's right! Great movie. Lots of heart and soul. In my top 10 so far this year.
